Rivière de l'Est Suspension Bridge: Vertiginous Beauty on Reunion's Wild Coast

The Rivière de l'Est gorge viewed from the suspension bridge, East coast of Reunion Island

A few kilometres north of Sainte-Rose, the Rivière de l’Est carves its way down from the heights of the volcano all the way to the Indian Ocean, sculpting a vertiginous canyon of black basalt along its course. The suspension bridge that spans the gorge offers one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the East coast — and one of the least visited. Standing above the void, facing a landscape of raw, uncompromising beauty, this is where Réunion reveals another facet of its volcanic character. A must-see, just 15 minutes from Villa Bigaradier.

Where is the Rivière de l’Est suspension bridge?

The Rivière de l’Est suspension bridge is accessible from the RN2 national road, approximately 8 km north of Sainte-Rose, towards Bois-Blanc. The river marks the boundary between the agricultural lands of the East coast and the first kilometres of the Grand Brûlé — that vast volcanic territory where the Piton de la Fournaise’s most recent lava flows have reshaped the coastline.

The bridge itself stretches across the gorge at a height that takes your breath away. Far below, the river winds between dark rocks before joining the ocean. On clear days, the panorama extends all the way to the coast and the Indian Ocean horizon.

How to get there

By car: From Sainte-Rose, take the RN2 heading north towards Bois-Blanc. Pass Notre-Dame des Laves and continue for approximately 5 km. The site is signposted. Allow 15 minutes from Sainte-Rose town centre.

Parking: An informal parking area is available roadside near the bridge. Aim to arrive early on weekdays to avoid weekend congestion.

On foot from Sainte-Rose: Coastal paths allow you to reach the Rivière de l’Est on foot from Sainte-Rose. Allow 1h30 to 2 hours depending on your pace. The coastal route offers fine views of the ocean throughout, making the journey a rewarding experience in itself.

By bus: The Car Jaune C2 line serves the RN2. Request the stop closest to the Rivière de l’Est.

The hike to the bridge and into the gorge

The suspension bridge: the unmissable viewpoint

The first — and most accessible — stop is simply to walk out onto the suspension bridge and take in the gorge. Below, the river has worn through the basalt over tens of metres. The vertical walls, black and glistening with moisture, stand in striking contrast to the tropical vegetation clinging to every crevice.

Even without venturing further on foot, this stop is well worth the detour. Take your time to observe: depending on the hour and the weather, the play of light within the gorge can be truly spectacular.

Descent into the gorge

For walkers equipped with proper footwear, a trail allows you to descend into the gorge down to the riverbank. The descent is steep and demands sturdy hiking shoes. At the bottom, natural pools hollowed out of the basalt form freshwater swimming holes where a dip is perfectly possible in dry weather and outside of flood season.

⚠️ Safety warning: Never descend into the gorge if rainfall is forecast at altitude. Flash floods are sudden and extremely dangerous in Reunion’s ravines. When in doubt, stay on the bridge.

The coastal path to Bois-Blanc

Beyond the bridge, the coastal trail continues towards Bois-Blanc, skirting the most recent lava flows that have reached the sea over centuries of Piton de la Fournaise eruptions. This is one of the wildest and least frequented stretches of the East coast. Vegetation is sparse, the landscape lunar — and the sense of vastness, total.

What you will see along the way

The hike between Sainte-Rose and the Rivière de l’Est is an open-air lesson in geology:

  • Historic lava flows that have continuously reshaped the coastline over the centuries
  • Pioneer vegetation reconquering volcanic terrain — a testament to nature’s extraordinary resilience
  • Basalt cliffs plunging into the ocean, sculpted by the trade winds and sea spray
  • Seabirds nesting in the cliff cavities — petrels, boobies and frigatebirds
  • Views over the Grand Brûlé from the higher sections of the path: a unique panorama over this still-active volcanic zone

When to visit

The dry season (May to November) is ideal for visiting the Rivière de l’Est. Paths are in better condition, flood risk is negligible and the morning light is particularly beautiful over the gorge.

During the rainy season (December to April), the river may be in flood and paths can be slippery. The bridge itself remains safe to visit, but descending into the gorge is inadvisable.

Best time of day: early morning, between 7 and 10 am, to catch the raking light in the gorge, avoid the afternoon heat, and enjoy the site in near-total solitude.

Combine it with nearby sites

The Rivière de l’Est is ideally visited as part of a full day that includes:

  • The Grand Brûlé (a few kilometres north) — recent lava flows that have reached the sea
  • Notre-Dame des Laves (5 km south) — the church miraculously spared by the 1977 lava flow
  • Anse des Cascades (8 km south) — lava waterfalls tumbling into the ocean and traditional fishing pirogues
  • Bois-Blanc (north) — one of the last truly isolated villages on the East coast
